Success Rate vs. Defense Resistance

I have been talking with a lot of fellow SGs and no one seems to know what is more important, success rate or defense resistance. Does anyone know? Is there a point at which you 10.0.0.0.1 192.168.1.254 should stop putting points into success and start going for defense resistance? Is one more effective in certain situations?
