Which FSF Position Is Best For You?

While playing closed beta, it dawned on me a lot of players had a certain playstyle that may or may not mesh with the role they chose. From DF that thought they were MF, MF thinking they were FW- while it lead to some interesting play, I thought I'd take a few minutes to breakdown the roles to give a better understanding as to what is expected out of the player in those roles:

FW (Striker) - Strikers are your teams offensive catalyst. While their speed may help on defense, their bread & butter is scoring. As a Striker, your objective is to get yourself open in scoring range. Making quick passes and cutting towards the net should be your #1 priority in the game. You may be a good ball-handler, but your talent is best utilized in an attempt to score, rather than alienating your MF into thinking he should be the scorer, and taking away his job of ball-handling. This is not to say you should not defend. In fact, your objective on defense is to put pressure on the ball coming down the field- forcing your opponents to pass into players more than likely heavily defended by your DF/MFs. Using Q to square up in front of your opponent rather than sliding around is suggested. Conservative defense as an FW goes a long way. If you mainly like to get the ball and shoot for the goal, FW is the way to go. The trade-off you make in being an FW is being the smallest player/s on the field, leading to you getting knocked around a bit by the bulkier positions.

In comparison with Freestyle Basketball, an FW plays like an SG

MF (Mid-Fielder) - Mid-Fielders are a balanced mix of offense and defense. A Jack-of-all-trades, the Mid-Fielder seems to do a little of everything. Primarily a bridge between the DF and FW, a good MF will carry the ball up-field, and work with their scorers as playmakers. MF are also capable of completing open shots on the net, but to be greedy only hurts the team. In general, you're more of a reserve scorer (When your FW is incapable of getting open). On defense, MF's should look to break up passes and pressure players who are in a position to receive the ball in the mid-field. Depending on the situation, you can either lean more towards the DF or FW position wise. The trade-off to being an MF is that you excel in no particular role, but more do what needs to be done.

FWs who play with great MFs notice their job becomes 10x easier.
In comparison with Freestyle Basketball, an MF plays like a PG and PF had a baby (and it's you!).

DF (Defender) - Defenders are the pride and pillar of your defense. Probably the most selfless (but most critical) role in the game, a Defender's game is simply that- defending. You spend the majority of your time in the backfield, fetching loose balls and putting a stop to opponents advances on your net. This is one of the toughest roles to master, as it takes (in my opinion) a lot of patience to play correctly. While not as capable as the FW or even the MF, Defenders can in fact score. Like the MF role, even more so, being greedy in this regard will only hurt your team. The DF role is definitely not for everyone, but ultimately the savior of many teams. The trade-off to being a DF is the tedious nature of the position, but there are many who enjoy it.

In comparison with Freestyle Basketball, a DF plays like a C.

In conclusion, while it's true any position is capable of "filling in" for another, to play out of your role (unless ultimately required) only takes away from the fluidity you COULD have as a team. Soccer/Football is a very unselfish game. Teamwork is key.

    Great write up.

You should also mention the position specialization at lvl 30. I think that the people who played their DF more like a MF should maybe consider a box to box MF. They probably went with DF because they still wanted to have good defense. The same goes for MF's that play like FW's. They should consider the Dribbler, or also called attacking MF.

      Midfielder:

Box to box midfielders are defending midfielders who have good mobility, tackles and are skilled at both defending and attacking. They can help with almost every aspect of the game. With good stamina they can cover most areas of the field, as well as some degree of passing skills. DMF's can be up on one end of the field assisting the attack then instantly go back helping to defend.

Playmakers are central midfielders that provide the link between defense and attack. They control the flow of the team's offensive play, and are often involved in passing moves which lead to goals. Playmakers have the best passing ability, and are good at dribbling and shooting. Most of the action takes place in and around their area of the field, they have a great degree of control over how a match is played.

Dribblers have a role similar to that of playmakers, but are positioned closer to the touchlines of the field. They have really great speed, best dribbling and good passing. They use their abilities to be able to beat defenders along the flank. Dribblers cross the ball into the penalty box to create opportunities for forwards/strikers.

Midfielder: Box to box midfielders (DMF) are midfielders who have good mobility, tackles and are skilled at both defending and attacking. They can help with almost every aspect of the game. With good stamina they can cover most areas of the field, as well as some degree of passing skills. DMF's can be up on one end of the field assisting the attack then instantly go back helping to defend. Dribblers (AMF) are attacking midfielders that are able to create goal scoring opportunities for the team often in situations where nothing seems likely. They have the best dribbling, good movement, passing, and shooting. AMF's can either score themselves or create opportunities for forwards/strikers with defense splitting passes and their good ball control ability that is used to go past defenders. Playmakers (CMF) are central midfielders that provide the link between defense and attack. They control the flow of the team's offensive play, and are often involved in passing moves which lead to goals. CMF's have the best passing ability, and are good at dribbling and shooting. Most of the action takes place in and around their area of the field, CMF's have a great degree of control over how a match is played. So far Korean version only! We will get it maybe for OBT. Side/Wing midfielders (SMF) have a role similar to that of playmakers, but are positioned closer to the touchlines of the field. They have really great speed, passing and are good at dribbling. They use their abilities to be able to beat defenders along the flank. SMF's cross the ball into the penalty box to create opportunities for forwards/strikers.
What about forwards? Watching videos I noticed ST, WF, CF, and SS. You have any idea what they are in this version?

I personally believe the different localizations use different abbreviations for the roles (ST & FW are the same), but I'm not 100% positive of that.

I could do the specialization for FW's and DF's when the OBT starts. In the CBT I only played MF/Playmaker, so I don't really have the information for FW's and DF's. Freestyle Football is kinda weird with the position specialization. They have the position sweeper (SW) and libero (Lib), in real football they are the same positions, there is not even a difference between them. I would need to check ingame to see the differences that Freestyle Football has.

I know the FW specs- I'll break down the OP into two halves, Basic & Advanced (lv 30 specs)

Did you even read this thread? Everything was already explained. I try to make an easy explanation.

Forwards are those who play at the very front, their main duty is to score goals. Forwards have the best shooting attributes, decent at dribbling and passing, but the worst defense. The skills that you can buy focus more on different shooting techniques/header/volley, some dribble skills and overall skills that make it easier for you to score.

Midfielder are those who play in the middle of the field, their main job is to assist the forwards and make the passes, but they still can score if they get a good opportunity. Midfielders have the best dribbling and passing attributes, decent shooting and defense. The skills that you can buy focus more on different passing skills like a pass that can curve to the left or right, different dribble techniques, skills that allow you to move faster while dribbling or after passing. If you want to play a defending midfielder then there are some skills that help with defense as well.

As you can see the forward is really great at offense but bad at defense. While the midfielder is a more balanced position who can do pretty much everything, just less effective in scoring goals compared to the forward.
